Gout in the foot

Gout is an acutely painful inflammation of the joint at the ball of the big or little toe. Gout is an arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in these joints along with the kidney’s difficulty in eliminating the acid. In some cases the body produces too much uric acid. Gout can also be found in the ankle joints.

Symptoms

There is usually a sudden onset of intense pain in one of the joints, usually the big toe. The joint will be hot, swollen and red. The pain is so intense the patient can not bear to have the bed covers touch, even standing is excruciating. They will also not have any recall of trauma to the area.

Diagnosis

The history of onset along with the appearance will usually be suspect of gout. Blood tests will be performed to determine uric acid levels. Joint fluid may be obtained and examined for uric acid crystals.

Treatment

There are several medications which can be employed to treat gout. Certain anti-inflammatory drugs are usually used first. Longterm control of uric acid levels may be controlled with Allipurinol. Your doctor will discuss the appropriate medication for you. Your diet may also need adjustment. Examples include grainy alcohols and certain foods high in purine.
